What else can I do to prevent cavities?
Last month we asked “Is tooth decay inevitable?” If you read my blog last month I hope your new question is “What is my risk for future tooth decay and what can I do to reduce that risk?” Our Cavity Prevention Program will help you answer those questions. Our program will address four specific areas: reparative, therapeutic, behavioral and non-modifiable aspects.
Reparative intervention involves re-mineralizing areas of future decay. Areas of tooth ”break down” that have not penetrated the enamel can often be repaired with products that stimulate saliva flow and provide minerals necessary for tooth re-mineralization.
Therapeutic interventions target bacteria levels, the acidity of the saliva and the saliva flow rate. We work toward tooth re-mineralization. Products recommended include: antimicrobial rinses, and products containing xylitol. Xylitol helps decrease bacterial levels, stimulates saliva flow and elevates pH (lowers the acid levels).
Behavioral interventions focus on oral hygiene and dietary modifications. We will discuss ways to better remove bacteria from your teeth. We will also discuss things like frequency and duration of sugar and acid intake and types of food to avoid.
The non-modifiable aspects of cavity prevention may include dry mouth, or medications affecting your bacteria levels or the acidity of your mouth.
With the right combination of products, instructions and guidance, cavities can be prevented. Our patients that have elected to go through our Cavity Prevention Program have seen remarkable results. Our most remarkable case is a patient who went from several cavities every six months to being cavity free for her last 3 checkups! My son also went through this program and re-mineralized three areas we had treatment planned for fillings.
We can stop cavities from occurring. We can re-mineralize areas of break down. We can make your mouth and your body healthier. It’s such a small investment for such a great return. Please consider our Cavity Prevention Program; it may be the best choice you ever make!
